Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team smothered Delaware State on offense Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center, taking a 52-29 win.

The Lady Pirates set a season-low in points allowed, giving up the fewest points since beating Winston-Salem State 62-26 last Feb. 8. Hampton also held the Lady Hornets to a season-low 15.4 percent 96-for-29) from the floor.

Delaware State made more free throws (17-for-23) than field goals.

Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 12 points – all in the first half – while junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 11 points. Warner and senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

When sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a layup with 16:25 left in the game, it capped an 11-2 run for the Lady Pirates dating back to the first half and gave them a 31-13 lead. Alexis Johnson scored Delaware State's first field goal of the second half with a layup at the 12:16 mark, but the Lady Hornets would go nearly seven minutes before their next field goal.

Johnson hit another layup at the 5:04 mark; Delaware State only made two field goals in the second half.

Freshman Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) made a layup with 2:26 to play to give Hampton a 49-27 lead. From there, the Lady Pirates made three of four free throws down the stretch.

Hampton (14-6, 7-1 MEAC) shot 34.0 percent (17-for-50) from the floor, hitting five of its 16 3-pointers.

Delaware State (5-14, 1-6 MEAC) out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 36-35, but missed all nine 3-point attempts. The Lady Hornets turned the ball over 24 times.

The Lady Pirates took a 25-11 lead into the half, thanks in large part to Jenkins. She scored Hampton's last seven points of the half in the last 2:02 – including a deep trey from the top of the key with five seconds left on the clock.

Jenkins had 12 points at the half as the Lady Pirates shot 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from the floor and held a 20-12 rebounding edge.

Delaware State shot just 12.5 percent (3-for-24) in the first half.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they take on Maryland Eastern Shore at the HU Convocation Center at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
