HAMPTON, Va. – For the second straight game, the Hampton University women's basketball team used a suffocating defense en route to victory, beating Maryland Eastern Shore 47-29 Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.
The Lady Pirates (15-6, 8-1 MEAC) matched their season low for points allowed – they held Delaware State to 29 points on Saturday – in picking up their third straight win. UMES made just nine field goals and 10 free throws.
Senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) led Hampton with 12 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 points and eight assists.
Casey Morton gave UMES a 2-0 lead with a jumper at the 19:24 mark in the first half, before the Lady Pirates went on a 14-0 run to take a 14-2 lead with 9:48 left in the half after a pair of Jenkins free throws.
Two free throws from junior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) put Hampton up 16-3 at the 6:50 mark. Perry extended the lead to 16, 24-8, with a 3-point play with 3:00 left in the half.
UMES (7-13, 4-4 MEAC) hit just two field goals in the last 6:00 of the half. Hampton went into the intermission with a 28-11 lead, holding the Lady Hawks to 26.7 percent (4-for-15) shooting.
The Lady Pirates opened the second half with seven unanswered points, taking a 35-11 lead with 16:21 to play after Perry converted another 3-point play. Perry hit two free throws with 12:11 to play to give Hampton its largest lead, 37-13.
Hampton held UMES to just five field goals in the second half.
The Lady Pirates forced UMES into 30 turnovers, a season high for Hampton, converting them into 27 points. Hampton shot 27.7 percent (18-for-65) from the floor, making eight of 11 free throws in the process.
Hampton also out-rebounded UMES 42-37.
UMES shot just 23.7 percent (9-for-38) from the floor, making just one of its four 3-point attempts. Morton led the Lady Hawks with seven points, while Chelsea Sanders pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
