BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, when they head to the Physical Education Complex to open the bulk of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Coppin State at 2 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (8-5, 1-0 MEAC), in their second season under head coach
David Six, had their seven-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night by Wake Forest 62-49 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Freshman guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.), in her third career game, led the Lady Pirates with 15 points, while senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) added 14 points to become the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Coppin State (2-9, 0-1 MEAC) lost its sixth straight game on Sunday, falling 55-51 at home to Robert Morris. Sophomore guard Shawntae Payne led the Lady Eagles with 17 points despite shooting 7-for-20 from the floor. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
Hampton is 14-14 all-time against Coppin State, having dropped last year's meeting 58-52 at the HU Convocation Center. In all, Coppin State has won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the two teams; Hampton last beat Coppin State on Feb. 21, 2009. The teams first met on Feb. 10, 1996, with Coppin State squeaking by with a 57-56 win. The Lady Pirates are 4-7 all-time against Coppin State on the road.
The Lady Eagles went 10-19 last season, finishing eighth in the MEAC with a 5-11 mark. Head coach Derek Brown returns two starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad, and Coppin State was picked to finish eighth in the MEAC this year.
Freshman forward Larissa Carter leads the Lady Eagles in scoring so far this season, averaging 9.8 points per game to go along with a team-high 8.4 rebounds per contest. Sophomore forward Leola Spotwood is pouring in 9.7 points per game, while junior center Jeanine Manley is averaging 9.5 points per contest.
Coppin State averages 60.0 points a night on offense, while giving up 64.5 points a game.
So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 4-3 on the road, having defeated James Madison 69-64 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT before falling 76-64 at South Dakota State, 64-57 at Charlotte and 62-49 at Wake Forest. Hampton has also defeated Radford 52-51, East Carolina 69-63 and Georgia State 74-44 on the road. Six is 10-10 on the road for his career as a head coach.
