JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the road again, as the Lady Pirates take on Jacksonville University at the Swisher Gymnasium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will kick off a span of four road games in 10 days for the Lady Pirates.
Hampton (1-0) opened the 2011-12 season this past Saturday with a 60-37 win over Pitt at the Petersen Events Center. Senior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the way with 22 points behind six 3-pointers, while senior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 12 points and junior forward
Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Dolphins (0-2) are coming off a 78-59 home loss to Florida A&M on Monday, and have lost three straight games dating back to last season. Jacksonville finished 15-17 last season, coming in seventh in the Atlantic Sun with an 8-12 record.
Jacksonville, in its eighth year under the direction of head coach Jill Dunn, returns two starters and 10 letterwinners from last season, and the Dolphins were picked to finish sixth in their conference.
The Dolphins are averaging just 48.0 points a game on offense so far this season, while giving up 70.5 points a night. Redshirt-sophomore guard Abril Peeples leads the team in scoring, with 13.5 points per game, while senior guard Crystal Bell is averaging 13.0 points per game to go along with a team-high 10.0 rebounds per contest.
Under third-year head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 18-10 on the road – including Saturday's convincing win over Pitt. Hampton went 11-4 on the road last season, including a stretch to close out the regular season in which the Lady Pirates won five straight on the road.
Dating back to Nov. 29 of last season, when Hampton defeated Radford 52-51, the Lady Pirates have won 25 of their last 28 games. The Lady Pirates have not lost back-to-back games since losing four straight from Nov. 15-27 of last season.
As of Nov. 15, the Lady Pirates are ranked No. 9 in CollegeInsider.com's Women's Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, and have received a first-place vote. Wisconsin Green Bay, with 25 out of 31 possible first-place votes, is No. 1 in the poll.
Jacksonville leads the all-time series against Hampton 1-0, following a 49-42 win at the HU Convocation Center on Nov. 27 of last season. The Lady Pirates have never faced another team from the Atlantic Sun: Belmont, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida, South Carolina Upstate or Stetson.
