FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates head to Hilliard Gates Sports Center to take on Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) at 2 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (2-1) are coming off their first loss of the season, a 63-46 defeat at Florida on Tuesday night despite 15 points from senior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas). Jenkins is just five points shy of becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 points for her career.
IPFW (2-3) has won two straight games following a 68-60 home win over Butler on Sunday. Senior guard Anne Boese scored a season-high 25 points behind a career-high eight 3-pointers.
Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 19-11 in road games over the past two-plus seasons, despite Tuesday's loss at Florida; Hampton's record on the road this season includes a 60-37 win at Pitt and a 68-55 win at Jacksonville. Hampton went 11-4 on the road last season, including a stretch to close out the regular season in which Hampton won five straight road games.
Hampton went 6-6 on the road in 2009-10, Six's first season at the helm.
The Mastodons finished the 2010-11 season with a 20-11 record, going 13-5 to finish second in the Summit League before advancing to the WNIT. IPFW, in its seventh season under head coach Chris Paul, returns two starters and five letterwinners from last year's team, and has been picked to finish fourth in the Summit League.
Boese leads four players in double figures in scoring with 15.8 points a game, while Erin Murphy is scoring 11.8 points a night. Preseason First Team All-Summit selection Stephanie Rosado is averaging 10.5 points a contest, while Amanda Hyde is pouring in 10.4 points per game — to go along with a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game.
The Mastodons are averaging 63.6 points a game on offense, while giving up 68.2 points a night.
Hampton is 3-0 all-time against IPFW, including last season's 78-77 double-overtime win at the HU Convocation Center. Before that, the two teams last met in 1987, when Hampton was still a Div. II program.
Hampton is 4-2 all-time against teams from the Summit League, including a 1-1 mark against those teams last season. The Lady Pirates fell 76-64 at South Dakota State last season, before defeating IPFW 78-77 in double-overtime.
On top of their record against IPFW, the Lady Pirates are 1-0 against North Dakota State, 0-1 against Oral Roberts and 0-1 against South Dakota State.
