CHICAGO –
The Hampton University women's basketball team picked up its second straight win on Monday, as the Lady Pirates upended Chicago State 66-39 at the Emil & Patricia Jones Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (4-1) held Chicago State to just 13 field goals on the night, including just five in the second half.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) had her second straight 20-point game, pouring in a team-high 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting and five 3-pointers. Senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 19 points, going 7-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Sophomore forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) led the way on the boards, tying her career high with 11 rebounds, while senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) dished out a season-high 11 assists.

The Cougars never led, and only forced one tie – a 2-2 stalemate in the opening minutes after a Janay Dockery layup. Bennett gave Hampton the lead back at the 16:50 mark of the first half with a jumper, and the Lady Pirates never looked back.

In fact, Hampton went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-4 lead at the 12:51 mark after a 3-pointer from McMillian. Another McMillian trey, with 10:33 left in the half, put Hampton up by double digits for the first time at 18-8.

Chicago State cut the lead to five, 18-13, on a Jazzmyn Harvey 3-point play at the 8:10 mark, but the Lady Pirates closed the half with a 16-6 run to go into the intermission with a 34-19 lead.

McMillian had 11 points at the half.

Chicago State went the first 6:07 of the second half without a field goal, as Hampton extended its lead to 43-19 before Natalie Marlowe finally got the Panthers on the board with a layup with 13:53 to play.

Half of the Cougars' 20 second-half points came at the free throw line.

The Lady Pirates led by as many as 32, when McMillian sank a pair of free throws with 8:00 left to play. McMillian has yet to miss a free throw this season, going 13-for-13 at the charity stripe.

The Lady Pirates shot a season-best 49.1 percent (26-for-53) from the floor and made eight of their 18 3-pointers – as well as all six of their free throws. Hampton also held a decisive 44-20 edge on the boards, and the Lady Pirates forced Chicago State (0-7) into 21 turnovers – scoring 30 points off of them.

Hampton also had 33 points off the bench and 17 fast-break points.

Chicago State shot just 28.9 (13-for-45) percent from the floor – including a 5-for-17 clip in the second half – and only made 12 of 19 free throws.

Dockery led the Cougars with 16 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they have their home debut at the HU Convocation Center against South Carolina State at 6 p.m. The game will also be Hampton's first conference game of the season.
