LADY PIRATES PUT WIN STREAK ON LINE AT UAB

Game Notes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Fresh off final exams, the Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the road again on Monday, as the Lady Pirates look for their sixth straight win against Alabama Birmingham at 8 p.m. EST at Bartow Arena.

The Lady Pirates (7-1) won their fifth straight game on Dec. 10, defeating Maryland Baltimore County 75-47 at the HU Convocation Center behind a season-high 26 points and 10 assists from senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas), while senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) hit a career-high-tying seven 3-pointers to add 21 points.

In all, Hampton made a school-record 14 3-pointers against UMBC.

The Blazers (7-2) have won six straight following Thursday's 57-46 home win over Alabama A&M. Sophomore forward Karisma Chapman led the way with a career-high 24 points, while senior guard LaShaundra Pratt added 11 points.

The Blazers were 20-15 last season, despite going just 7-9 in conference play to finish tied for seventh in Conference USA, and won the WBI Tournament championship. UAB, under eighth-year head coach Audra Smith, returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's squad, and the Blazers were picked to finish sixth in Conference USA.

Junior guard Amber Jones leads UAB in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game, while Chapman pours in 15.8 points a night to go with 6.0 rebounds per contest. Pratt is averaging 12.1 points a game, and senior center Meagan Brown is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 6.3 boards a night.

UAB averages just 60.4 points per game on offense, but the Blazers only give up 47.8 points per contest — among the nation's top-five best scoring defenses. Hampton also sports one of the nation's top scoring defenses, as the Lady Pirates are only giving up 48.0 points a contest.

Hampton has held each of its last four opponents under 50 points.

The Lady Pirates are 0-1 all-time against UAB, with the Blazers winning the only meeting between the two teams 66-47 in Birmingham, Ala. on Dec. 19, 2006.

The Lady Pirates are 2-10 all-time against teams in Conference USA. Hampton is 0-1 against Central Florida; 1-5 against East Carolina; 0-1 against Southern Methodist; 1-1 against Southern Miss; 0-1 against Tulane; and 0-1 against UAB.

Hampton has never faced Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Tulsa or Texas-El Paso.
