Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. --
The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its fourth straight win on Monday, as the Lady Pirates take on MEAC newcomer Savannah State at 7 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (5-1, 1-0 MEAC) won their home opener on Saturday, beating South Carolina State 73-41. Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the way with 19 points, while senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 12 points and junior forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 10 points.

Warner and Phelps each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Savannah State (4-3, 0-1 MEAC) is coming off a 54-49 loss at Norfolk State on Saturday, and the Lady Tigers have lost three of their last four games.

The Lady Tigers finished the 2010-11 season with a 15-11 record as an independent, and come into the 2011-12 campaign, their first in the MEAC. Savannah State, under ninth-year head coach Cedric Baker, return two starters and six letterwinners from last year's squad and was picked to finish 11th in the MEAC this season.

Sophomore guard Ezinne Kalu leads the team and the MEAC in scoring so far this season, pouring in 21.1 points per game, while sophomore guard Blessing Uba is averaging 10.3 points per night. Senior forward Alisha Nelson is the team's top rebounder, sitting fourth in the conference with 9.6 rebounds per contest.

Savannah State is averaging just 56.4 points per game on offense, while giving up 54.0 points per contest.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Hampton and Savannah State.

The Lady Pirates are 268-128 all-time against teams currently in the MEAC. Hampton has faced every team currently in the conference except for Savannah State, and the Lady Pirates have a winning record against every other conference team.

In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).

Saturday's win over South Carolina State Saturday night was the 50th in the young collegiate coaching career of head coach David Six; Six reached the 50-win mark in just over two seasons at the helm, and he has a .714 winning percentage.

Six is 28-5 against MEAC competition — an .848 winning percentage.
