LADY PIRATES CLOSE OUT HOMESTAND AGAINST UMBC

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will conclude its three-game homestand on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates take on Maryland Baltimore County at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (6-1) won their fourth straight game on Monday, beating Savannah State 49-40 to improve to 2-0 in MEAC play. Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the way with 22 points, hitting six of her 11 3-pointers, while senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 12 points.

Hampton has won 30 of its last 34 games dating back to last season.

The Retrievers (5-4) won their second straight game on Thursday, beating George Mason 65-53. Senior guard/forward Erin Brown led the way with 21 points, while senior guard Michelle Kurowski added 19 points and eight rebounds. Brittany Crowell chipped in 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds for UMBC.

The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against UMBC, having won the only meeting between the two teams on Dec. 8, 1996 — a 60-59 win on a neutral court.

The Retrievers went 20-12 last season, winning the America East regular-season title with a 13-3 mark before advancing to the WNIT. UMBC, in 10th year under head coach Phil Stern, returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad, and the Retrievers were picked to win the regular-season conference title again this season.

Brown leads the Retrievers in scoring so far this season, pouring in 16.7 points per game to go along with a team-high 6.4 rebounds per contest, while Kurowski is second on the team in scoring — averaging 14.1 points per contest.

UMBC averages just 59.4 points a night on offense, but the Retrievers only give up 59.2 points per game.

The Lady Pirates are 1-1 all-time against teams in the America East conference, going 1-0 against UMBC and 0-1 against Stony Brook; Stony Brook beat the Lady Pirates on a neutral court 81-65 on Dec. 8, 2001.

Hampton has never faced Albany, Binghamton, Boston University, Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont.

The Lady Pirates have already established themselves as one of the best defensive teams not only in the MEAC, but in all of Division I. Through Dec. 4, Hampton is fourth in the country in 3-point field goal percentage defense, 13th in scoring defense and 24th in field goal percentage defense.

After beating Savannah State on Monday, Hampton has held opponents to just 48.1 points per game this season, while only allowing 33.5 percent shooting from their seven opponents. Teams are only hitting 21.8 percent (19-for-87) of their 3-pointers against Hampton so far this season.

In all, the Lady Pirates have held five of their seven opponents so far this season under 60 points — and four under 50 points (including the last three). Hampton's season high in points allowed is just 63, at Florida on Nov. 22.

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 22-5 at the HU Convocation Center over the past two-plus seasons — including a 10-2 mark at home last season and a 10-3 mark in 2009-10. The Lady Pirates have won 12 straight at home dating back to last season.
