SOFTBALL LOSES FOUR IN UPSTATE CLASSIC

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
The Hampton University softball team lost all four of its games in the 2011 USC Upstate Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Cyrill Stadium.

The Lady Pirates (4-7) fell 10-2 to George Mason in six innings and 13-1 to USC Upstate in five innings on Saturday, before losing 8-0 to George Mason in five innings and 7-3 to USC Upstate on Sunday. Sophomore Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

George Mason struck first in Saturday's game, going up 3-0 in the second inning on a three-run home run to left field by Katie Rynex, before the Lady Pirates responded with a pair of runs in the third inning. Sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) scored on a muffed throw, before sophomore Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) drove home another run with a groundout.

The Patriots scored five times in the fifth inning to pull ahead for good, an inning in which Rynex added a two-run homer. George Mason scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a throwing error and a wild pitch.

The Lady Pirates were held to just two hits in the game.

USC Upstate struck first in Saturday's second game, scoring 10 runs in the first inning, taking advantage of seven hits and two errors before adding another run in the second inning on an RBI double from Katelyn Molkenthin.

Trimble got the Lady Pirates on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single.

A passed ball and a fielder's choice gave Upstate two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

The Lady Pirates were held to two hits for the second straight game.

George Mason opened Sunday's game with five runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three errors, before adding another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Reagan Doiron. Emily Lafferty scored on a muffed throw before Samantha Barney added a sac fly of her own in the fifth inning.

For the third straight game, the Lady Pirates were held to two hits.

Erica Kaufman got USC Upstate on the board in Sunday's second game with a fielder's choice in the second inning, but the Lady Pirates took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Ferguson singled home a run and Trimble added a two-run home run.

It was her second homer of the season.

Lauren Quevedo led off the fourth inning with a home run to cut Hampton's lead to 3-2, before Upstate added three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead on a Katie Zauner three-run homer. Ericka Harris singled home a run in the sixth, before Upstate scored on a throwing error to push the game to its final margin.

The Lady Pirates had five hits scattered among five players: Ferguson, Trimble, Estep, Vickers and junior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.). Trimble drove in two runs

The Lady Pirates will return to action on March 4-6, when they open the new Lady Pirates Softball Complex with the 2011 Lady Pirates Classic, where they'll face such teams as Brown, Central Connecticut State, Marist and Fairleigh Dickinson.
