WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take on Morgan State in the championship game of the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Joel Coliseum, and the game will be televised live on ESPN2.
The women's title game, where the top-seeded Lady Pirates will take on No. 6 Howard at 5 p.m. on Saturday, will be televised via tape delay on ESPNU on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Hampton has never swept both MEAC basketball crowns in the same season.
The No. 2 Pirates (23-8) have won four straight games after beating Norfolk State in Friday's semifinal 85-61. Morgan State (17-13), the tournament's No. 4 seed, upended top seed Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals 61-48. The Pirates will be seeking their first MEAC Tournament title since 2006, while the Bears will be looking for their third straight title.
Hampton is 19-10 against Morgan State since moving up to Division I in 1995, losing 78-72 to the Bears in Baltimore, Md. on Jan. 10. Morgan State swept last season's meetings, beating the Pirates 73-63 at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 11, 2010, before winning in the MEAC Tournament semifinals on March 12, 2010 74-67. Hampton won the first three meetings against the Bears, and the Pirates would go on to win nine straight against Morgan State from 1999-2003.
The top-seeded Lady Pirates (24-6) have won 12 straight games heading into Saturday's championship game against Howard, and are in search of their second straight tournament title. The Lady Bison (16-17), featuring MEAC Player of the Year Saadia Doyle, will look to extend their winning streak to four and beat Hampton for the first time this season.
The Lady Pirates are 19-20 all-time against Howard, after the two teams split both meetings last season. Hampton beat the Lady Bison earlier this season, 68-52 on Dec. 4 at the HU Convocation Center, before taking a 60-54 win in Washington, D.C. on March 3 to close out the regular season. The Bison beat the Lady Pirates 48-47 on Dec. 5, 2009 in Washington, D.C., before Hampton returned the favor on March 4, 2010 at the HU Convocation Center with a 55-43 win. Hampton has won 15 of the last 18 games against Howard, including eight in a row from 2002-06.
