SOFTBALL SWEPT BY LONGWOOD

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

FARMVILLE, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Longwood University on Saturday at Lancer Field, dropping the first game 14-1 in five innings before falling 7-4 in the second game.

The Lady Pirates (7-19) struck first in the top of the first inning in the first game, when sophomore Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) drove in sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) with a groundout to second.

The Lancers answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, thanks largely to an RBI double from Jordan Cox and an RBI single by Ashley Kramer. Cox single home two more runs as part of a three-run second inning that put Longwood up 6-1.

Longwood broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning, pushing across seven runs. Kami Nuckols hit a grand slam to center field to get the scoring started in the frame, before Maggie Margadonna hit a solo home run and Kramer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push across another run.

Briana Wells walked with the bases loaded to bring in the final run of the inning.

An RBI triple down the right field line by Brooke Short in the bottom of the fourth put the first game of the doubleheader out of reach. Wells went five innings on the mound, holding the Lady Pirates to five hits.

Margadonna scored on a wild pitch in the first inning of the second game to put the Lancers on the board first, before Nichole Simmons doubled home a run and Margadonna drove in another with a groundout to put Longwood up 3-0 after two innings.

The Lady Pirates answered with three runs in the top of the third, though, thanks to a two-run double by junior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and an RBI single by junior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) to tie the game 3-3.

Hampton added another run in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead when senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) stole home.

Margadonna singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4, before the Lancers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Margadonna hit a two-run home run to right-center field, before Short added a solo shot to center field.

Byrd led the Lady Pirates with three hits in four trips to the plate, while Vickers and Estep each had two hits.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to open conference play against Maryland Eastern Shore in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
