HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team opened the Lady Pirates Softball Complex by hosting the Lady Pirates Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, losing all three of its games.
The Lady Pirates (4-12) fell 3-2 to Brown and 11-3 to Central Connecticut State in six innings on Friday, before losing 6-2 to Marist on Saturday. Sunday's contest against Fairleigh Dickenson was canceled due to inclement weather.
Brown got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Stephanie Thompson drove in the first run with a double to center field, before Kristi Munoz added an RBI single up the middle.
Thompson homered in the top of the fourth inning to give Brown a 3-0 lead.
Hampton staged a tally in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run double from sophomore
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.), but came up one run short.
Seven Lady Pirates recorded a hit against the Bears, and freshman
Heather Ryder (Ontario, Canada) struck out four batters in four innings of work. Junior
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) were three innings, striking out two.
Central Connecticut scored in each of the first three innings in Friday afternoon's contest, beginning with an inside-the-park home run from Rebecca Mussatti in the first inning. Mussatti also singled home a run in the second inning after an RBI single from Macy Stefanski.
Bruno homered to lead off the third inning, before Stephanie Chotkevys singled home a run.
Stefanski singled home another run in the fifth inning, before the Lady Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore
Tracy Lee (Gates, N.C.) scored on a groundout, before junior
Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) crossed the plate on a passed ball to cut CCSU's lead to 6-2.
CCSU pushed across five runs in the sixth inning to bust the game open, mostly thanks to doubles from Erica Koehler, Sarah Vlahos and Stefanski.
Ferguson drove in another run in the bottom of the inning with a single.
The Lady Pirates took a 2-0 lead on Saturday against Marist after two innings. Byrd drove in the first run in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI groundout, before Ryder drove in the other run in the second inning after reaching on an error, bringing in freshman
Chelsea Noler (Hesperia, Calif.).
Marist responded by scoring six runs in the top of the third inning, starting with an RBI single from Megan Lamoureux. Alyssa Zahka drove in another run with a fielder's choice before Haley Birnbaum and Lindsay Durant each brought in two runs after errors.
Ferguson went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, when they take on George Washington in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex.
