Box Score
Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Hampton University football team lit up the scoreboard at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Saturday night, but Old Dominion squeaked out a 45-42 win to hand the Pirates their first loss of the season.

The Pirates fell to 2-1 on the season, while the Monarchs improved to 3-0.

The Monarchs had an 11-point lead, 45-34, with 3:41 left in the contest thanks to a 7-yard scamper from ODU quarterback Thomas DeMarco – his second touchdown rush of the night, culminating a drive that came about thanks to a Hampton fumble.

But the Pirates stormed back down the field, going 41 yards in seven plays before senior quarterback David Legree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found senior wideout Reginald Hicks (Hampton, Va.) for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:346 to play.

Legree found Hicks again for the 2-point conversion to pull Hampton to within 45-42.

The Pirates then tried an onside kick, but the ball rolled out of bounds and ODU ran out the clock on a soggy night.

Both teams played a scoreless first quarter; Hampton cracked the scoreboard first with 11:34 left in the second quarter, when sophomore running back Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) found the end zone from three yards to put the Pirates up 7-0.

After ODU answered with a 42-yard field goal from Jarod Brown at the 8:55 mark of the second quarter, Legree ran into the end zone from 15 yards out at the 6:48 mark to put the Pirates up 10-3.

Angus Harper gave ODU its first lead of the night with 6:12 left in the first half with a 39-yard scoring run, before Colby Goodwyn ran in from seven yards with 20 second left in the half to send ODU into the locker room with a 17-14 lead.

Harper found the end zone again, 50 seconds into the third quarter, to expand ODU's lead to 24-14, but the Pirates were not about to go down quietly.

Junior kicker Taurean Durham (Uniondale, N.Y.) hit a pair of field goals in the third quarter – from 32 and 37 yards – to pull Hampton to within 24-20, before junior defensive lineman Jeremy Jermin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave Hampton the lead with 1:53 left in the quarter by recovering an ODU fumble and rumbling 42 yards into the end zone.

Hampton led 27-24 after three quarters of play.

ODU responded with 13:29 left in the game, when Larry Pinkard blocked a Hampton punt and ran five yards into the end zone to put the Monarchs up 31-27. The Pirates responded by going 73 yards in eight plays, taking the lead again with 10:44 to play when freshman Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored on a 9-yard run to put Hampton up 34-31.

DeMarco's first rushing score of the night came with 6:50 to go in the game, when he found the end zone from 16 yards out to put ODU back on top 38-34.

Legree, on top of going 25-for-35 in the air for 260 yards and a touchdown, led the Pirates in rushing with 66 yards on 17 carries and a score. In all, six Pirates combined for 137 rushing yards on the night.

Hampton had 397 yards of total offense on the night.

Junior wideout Javaris Brown (Macon, Ga.) led Hampton in receiving with eight catches for 97 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) tied a game-high with 17 tackles for the Pirates, while junior linebacker Lyndell Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 13 stops and junior defensive back Justin Blake (Piscataway, N.J.) had 12 tackles.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday, when they head to Daytona Beach, Fla. To take on Bethune-Cookman at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
