PIRATES TO TAKE ON BETHUNE-COOKMAN ON ESPNU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University football team will look to get back into the win column on Thursday, when the Pirates take to the road to face conference foe Bethune-Cookman at Municipal Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

The game, Hampton's third in 15 days, will be televised live on ESPNU.

Hampton (2-1, 1-0 MEAC) suffered its first loss of the season this past Saturday, falling 45-42 at Old Dominion, while the Wildcats are coming off their bye week; Bethune-Cookman (1-1, 0-1 MEAC) lost its last game on Sept. 10, falling 26-18 to South Carolina State.

Senior quarterback David Legree (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, went 25-for-35 in the air for 260 yards and a touchdown against ODU – while rushing 17 times for 66 yards and another score in the loss. Legree is third in the MEAC in passing, averaging 209.0 yards per game, while also sitting fifth in the MEAC with 64.3 rushing yards per contest.

Sophomore linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 17 tackles – a game high – against ODU, to go along with forcing two turnovers. Junior kicker Taurean Durham (Uniondale, N.Y.) was named MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week.

Hampton's 42 points against Old Dominion were the most the Pirates scored in a game since beating North Carolina A&T 35-21 on Sept. 18, 2010. The last time Hampton cracked the 40-point mark was on Sept. 20, 2008, when the Pirates defeated North Carolina A&T 44-7.

Thanks in large part to its offensive performance at ODU, Hampton, guided by first-year offensive coordinator Willie Snead III, is second in the MEAC in both scoring offense (28.7 points per game) and total offense (390.3 yards per game).

So far this season, the Pirates are fourth in the MEAC in scoring defense, giving up 27.3 points per game, and total defense, giving up 347.7 yards per game. Hampton is also second in the MEAC in sacks, totaling eight in three games so far in 2011. Tyler is currently second in the MEAC in tackles with 35, averaging 11.7 per game, while junior linebacker Lyndell Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va.), a Virginia Tech transfer, is tied for fourth in the conference with 31 tackles, an average of 10.3 per game.

The Pirates are 9-7 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, though the Wildcats have won the last three meetings between the two teams – including a 23-18 win at Armstrong Stadium last season. Prior to the Wildcats' winning streak in the series, the Pirates had won four in a row against B-CU. The two teams first met in 1995, Hampton's first season at the Div. I level, with the Pirates winning 34-14. Hampton is 4-3 all-time in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Pirates are 187-154-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) following a 23-17 win over Florida A&M on Sept. 8. Hampton is 9-7 against Bethune-Cookman; 23-13 against Delaware State; 8-12 against Florida A&M; 47-39-1 against Howard; 22-35-2 against Morgan State; 23-24-1 against Norfolk State; 25-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 16-5 against MEAC newcomer North Carolina Central; 3-0 against MEAC newcomer Savannah State; and 11-6 against South Carolina State.

Thursday's contest between Hampton and Bethune-Cookman will mark the second time this season the Pirates will play in front of a national television audience on ESPNU; Hampton also faced Florida A&M on ESPNU on Sept. 8, coming away with a 23-17 win at Armstrong Stadium. Hampton's 45-42 loss to ODU was also shown on regional television, shown on Cox channel 11 via tape-delay.

The Pirates will have their bye week following Thursday's contest.
