BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team scored a season-high 83 points on Monday at the Talmadge Hill Field House en route to an 83-51 win over Morgan State.
The Lady Pirates (13-3, 5-0 MEAC) ran their winning streak to four games and handed Morgan State its 12th loss in 13 games. Hampton has won every conference game so far this season by double digits.
Senior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 22 points, hitting four 3-pointers, while senior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 16 points and tallied a season-high 12 assists to become the second player if program history to have 500 career assists.
Jenkins now has 511 career assists.
Sophomore guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 15 points, while senior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) chipped in 13 points and junior forward
Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 points.
Sophomore forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Morgan St hung tough early, taking a 9-7 lead with 15:39 left in the first half after Amarah Williams sank a layup. But back-to-back jumpers from Jenkins and McMillian put Hampton up 11-9 with 14:49 left in the half, and the Lady Pirates never trailed again.
Moneisha Davis brought Morgan State within three, 15-12, at the 12:53 mark with a pair of free throws, but Hampton scored four in a row to take a 19-12 lead with 12:07 left in the half after Hamilton drained a jumper.
Williams converted a layup at the 6:02 mark to bring the Lady Bears within two, 25-23, but Jenkins hit a 3-pointer eight seconds later to kick off a 9-0 run, culminating in a McMillian trey with 3:05 left in the half to put Hampton up 34-23.
Hamilton scored on a layup at the buzzer to send the Lady Pirates into the half up 41-27. Twelve of Hamilton's points came in the first half. McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 13 at the break.
Jenkins hit a pair of free throws at the 14:45 mark of the second half to put Hampton up 54-37, before Morgan State closed to within 11, 54-43, with 12:16 to play after a Whitney Courtland 3-pointer. From there, the Lady Pirates went on a 23-5 run, going up 77-48 with 3:48 to play after a Phelps layup.
Morgan State only had two field goals in the final 11:21 of the game.
The Lady Pirates shot 39.7 percent (29-for-73) from the floor, hitting eight of their 26 3-pointers and 17 of their 20 free throws. Hampton forced the Lady Bears into 24 turnovers, while only committing eight on the offensive end.
Hampton also out-rebounded Morgan Ste 44-38.
The Lady Bears (3-14, 0-4 MEAC) shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the floor, hitting seven of their 25 3-pointers and six of their nine free throws.
Lockhart and Mathis led Morgan State with nine points each.
