LADY PIRATES TO TAKE ON EAST CAROLINA AT HOME

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Monday, taking on East Carolina at the HU Convocation Center at 7 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (9-3) have lost two of their last four games following a 66-53 loss at Tulane on Thursday in the championship game of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic. Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the way with 28 points, while junior forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) pulled down 10 rebounds.

Both Jenkins and Phelps were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Pirates have not lost back-to-back games since a four-game losing streak in November of last season.

East Carolina (6-6) lost its third straight game on Thursday, falling 64-57 to Lafayette in the Terrapin Classic. Senior forward Chareya Smith led the way with 14 points for the Pirates, while forward Britny Edwards added 13 points and junior guard Shala Hodges poured in 12 points.

Freshman forward Tatiana Chapple pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

East Carolina went 16-15 last season, while also going 9-7 in Conference USA to end up tied for fourth. The Pirates, under second-year head coach Heather Macy, return two starters and six letterwinners from last season, but East Carolina does welcome in eight newcomers.

Hodges is leading the team in scoring so far this season with 11.9 points per game, while Smith is pouring in 10.0 points per night. Edwards is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 8.5 boards a contest.

The Pirates are scoring 62.8 points a game, while giving up just 53.8 points a contest.

Hampton is 1-5 all-time against East Carolina, with their lone win coming last season — 69-63 in Greenville, N.C. on Dec. 8. East Carolina has won both meetings in Hampton, Va. — 59-58 on Nov. 18, 1997 and 65-61 on Dec. 12, 2009.

The Lady Pirates are 2-12 all-time against teams in Conference USA, having going 0-1 against Central Florida; 1-5 against East Carolina; 0-1 against Southern Methodist; 1-1 against Southern Mississippi; 0-2 against Tulane and 0-2 against UAB.

Hampton has never faced Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Tulsa or Texas-El Paso.

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 23-5 at  the HU Convocation Center over the past two-plus seasons — including a 10-2 mark at home last season and a 10-3 mark in 2009-10. The Lady Pirates have won 13 straight at home dating back to last season.

Hampton has beaten South Carolina State, Savannah State and Maryland Baltimore County at home so far this season.
