HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday to square off against James River rival Norfolk State at 4 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (13-3, 5-0 MEAC) have won four straight games overall and 18 straight games against MEAC foes after Monday's 83-51 win at Morgan State. Senior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) hit four 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 22 points, while senior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 16 points and a season-high 12 assists.
Jenkins now has a program Div. I-record 511 career assists, and she is just the second player in program history to have 1,000 career points and 500 career assists.
Sophomore guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 15 points, while senior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) chipped in 13 points and junior forward
Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 points.
Sophomore forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Norfolk State (8-9, 3-3 MEAC) has won three of its last five games despite Monday's 67-62 loss at Coppin State. Sophomore guard Rae Corbo led the Spartans with 18 points, while freshman center Quineshia Leonard added 13 points and senior guard Whitney Long poured in 12 points.
Sophomore forward Rachel Gordon pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Norfolk State went 9-19 last season, finishing 11th in the MEAC with a 2-14 in conference play. Norfolk State, led by third-year head coach Debra Clark (who played at Hampton from 1979-82), returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last season, and the Spartans were picked to finish 13th in the league this year.
Long is the team's leading scorer, dropping 14.3 points a contest, while Corbo is second on the team with 12.9 points a game. Gordon is the team's leading rebounder, sitting atop the MEAC with 9.6 boards per game.
The Spartans are averaging 64.5 points a game on offense, while giving up 65.2 points a night.
Hampton is 46-32 all-time against Norfolk State, having won the last 10 meetings between the two teams, including both of last season's contests. Norfolk State last beat Hampton on Dec. 2, 2006, 70-66 in Echols Hall. As a Div. I program, the Lady Pirates are 26-4 against the Spartans, and Hampton is 20-12 all-time against Norfolk State at home.
The Lady Pirates, the preseason favorites to win the MEAC this season, are 265-135 all-time against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC school. In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).
Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 25-5 at the HU Convocation Center over the past two-plus seasons — including a 10-2 mark at home last season and a 10-3 mark in 2009-10. The Lady Pirates have won 15 straight at home dating back to last season — a streak they will look to add to on Saturday against Norfolk State.
Hampton is 5-0 at home this season, having beaten South Carolina State, Savannah State, Maryland Baltimore County, East Carolina and Howard.
