Game Notes
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will close its opening homestand of the season on Sunday, taking on Chicago State at 4 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
Admission will be free and open to the public.
The Lady Pirates (3-0) are coming off Friday's 67-58 win over LSU at the Convocation Center, while Chicago State picked up its first win of the season on Friday, beating Illinois Northwest 67-44 in Chicago, Ill.
Senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Lady Pirates (3-0) with 19 points and 10 rebounds – recording her third double-double of the season and her eighth in the last 12 games dating back to last season.
Junior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting and nine rebounds, while junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) had a career-high 10 assists and four blocks to go along with nine points.
Senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) added a career-high eight points off the bench.
The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against Chicago State, having won last season's meeting in Chicago, Ill. 66-39.
The Panthers went 6-24 overall last season and just 4-6 in Great West Conference play. Chicago State, in its 10th season under head coach Angela Jackson, returns three starters and seven letterwinners from 2011-12. The Great West does not have a preseason poll, and the league does not receive an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
Sophomore forward Paris Williams led all scorers with 15 points on Friday against Illinois Northwest, while freshman forward April Watson added 12 points and freshman forward Layne Murphy added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Prior to Friday, the Panthers had lost 82-58 to Wisconsin-Milwaukee and 88-55 to Missouri. Chicago State is 0-1 on the road so far this season.
Sophomore guard Jackie Jones leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game so far this season. Murphy is the team's top rebounder so far in 2012-13, pulling down 7.3 boards a night.
The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against teams in the Great West, thanks to last season's 66-39 win at Chicago State. Hampton has never faced the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), North Dakota, Utah Valley, Texas-Pan American, or Houston Baptist.
Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are 30-6 at the HU Convocation Center over the past three-plus seasons — including a 9-1 record at home last season. Hampton's lone home loss last season came in overtime against Coppin State, 69-66 on Jan. 28.
Prior to that loss, the Lady Pirates had won 16 straight home games under Six. The Lady Pirates have won their last five home non-conference games, including Friday's 67-58 win over LSU.
