JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the road yet again on Thursday, taking on Saint Peter's at the Yanitelli Center at 7 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (8-4) are coming off a 64-45 win over Evansville at the Toledo Invite on Friday, Dec. 21. Sophomore guard
Kenia Cole (Burtonsville, Md.) led the way with 16 points, while senior guard
JoNiquia Guilford (Chesapeake, Va.) added 14 points and six rebounds.
The Peacocks (0-9) are still searching for their first win of the season after falling 69-62 to Bucknell in overtime on Saturday, Dec. 22. Senior forward Kristal Edwards led Saint Peter's with 20 points, while sophomore guard Antonia Smith added 15 points.
Senior forward Jesika Holmes had 11 rebounds in the loss.
Saint Peter's went 5-26 overall last season, finishing ninth in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a 4-14 mark. The Peacocks, in their ninth season under head coach Stephanie DeWolfe, return three starters and eight letterwinners from last season, and they were picked to finish 10th in the MAAC.
Edwards leads Saint Peter's in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game this season to go along with 6.0 rebounds per contest. Holmes is the top rebounder, grabbing 6.5 boards a night.
The Peacocks are averaging just 48.9 points per game, while giving up 71.0 points per contest.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Hampton and Saint Peter's.
The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against schools currently in the MAAC, having defeated Iona 66-58 on the road on Dec. 7, 1996. Hampton has never faced Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola (Md.), Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Rider, Saint Peter's, or Siena.
Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are 35-13 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.
The Lady Pirates won their first five roads game of the 2012-13 season, taking care of Southern Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina State, Savannah State, and UMBC.
