LADY PIRATES SET FOR IN-STATE MATCH-UP WITH HOKIES

Game Notes

BLACKSBURG, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will conclude its 2012 slate on the road on Sunday, squaring off against Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.

The Lady Pirates (9-4) took care of Saint Peter's 62-40 on Thursday in Jersey City, N.J., thanks to a game-high 14 points from senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.)  Junior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 13 points, while also tying her career high with 13 rebounds.

Virginia Tech (6-5) has won back-to-back games after Friday's 58-39 home win over North Carolina A&T. Junior guard Monet Tellier and senior guard Alyssa Fenyn led the Hokies with 12 points each, while junior forward Uju Ugoka added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hokies went 7-21 last season, their first under head coach Dennis Wolff. Virginia Tech (6-5) was picked to finish 11th in the ACC this season.

Ugoka leads the Hokies in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest. Tellier is second on the team in both categories, pouring in 12.7 points a game to go along with 6.5 boards a night.

Virginia Tech is scoring 53.1 points a game, while giving up 53.3 points a night.

Hampton is 0-3 all-time against Virginia Tech, though the two teams have not met since 2001, when the Hokies were still members of the Big East and beat the Lady Pirates 83-43. All three meetings (1995, '99, 2001) were in Cassell Coliseum.

The Lady Pirates are 2-15 all-time against schools currently in the ACC. Hampton is 1-0 against Boston College; 0-4 against Duke; 0-1 against Georgia Tech; 1-1 against Maryland; 0-1 against Miami Fla.); 0-1 against North Carolina; 0-2 against Virginia; 0-3 against Virginia Tech; and 0-2 against Wake Forest.

The last time Hampton faced Miami and Virginia Tech, those schools were members of the Big East.

The Lady Pirates have never faced Clemson, Florida State, or N.C. State.

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are 36-13 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.

The Lady Pirates won their first six roads game of the 2012-13 season, taking care of Southern Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina State, Savannah State, UMBC, and Saint Peter's.
