SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will wrap up its conference-opening road trip on Monday, taking on Savannah State at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Pirates (5-3, 1-0 MEAC) got back into the win column on Saturday with a 59-46 win at South Carolina State. Sophomore guard
Kenia Cole (Burtonsville, Md.) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with a career-high 20 points, while also dishing out a career-high five assists.
Senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added 12 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, while junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) and senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) each had 10 points.
Savannah State (3-4, 1-0 MEAC) picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday with a 62-55 win over Norfolk State. Junior guard Ezinne Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 21 points, while junior guard Adrietta Thomas had 11 points and junior guard Jasmine Kirkland added 10 points.
Savannah State was picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season, the team's second in the conference. The Lady Tigers, in their 11th season under head coach Cedric Baker, return three starters from last year's squad.
Kalu, a Preseason First Team All-MEAC selection, leads Savannah State in scoring with 14.7 points per game – and she became the first Lady Tiger at the Div. I level to reach 1,000 career points earlier this season against Mississippi State.
Thomas is the other Lady Tiger in double figures this season, averaging 12.1 points per game, while senior forward Erin Hogue is averaging a team-high 8.4 rebounds a contest.
Savannah State is scoring 58.0 points a game, while giving up 65.6 points a night.
The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against Savannah State, having beaten the Lady Tigers in their only previous meeting 59-40 last season in the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton has won three straight MEAC tournament championships and back-to-back regular-season titles, and the Lady Pirates were picked to finish second in the conference this season. Hampton is a combined 277-138 all-time against teams currently in the MEAC, and the Lady Pirates are .500 or better against all of their conference foes.
Hampton is 3-0 in true road games so far this season, continuing the team's run of road success under head coach
