CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will return to non-conference play on Friday, taking on the Retrievers of Maryland Baltimore County at 7 p.m. in the RAC Arena.
The Lady Pirates (6-3) remained unbeaten in MEAC play on Monday with a 70-40 win at Savannah State. Senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) led Hampton with 22 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) added a career-high 18 points.
UMBC (3-6) has lost three straight games after Wednesday's 70-41 loss at Virginia Commonwealth. Senior guard Brittany Crowell led the Retrievers with nine points and tying for the team high with five rebounds.
The Retrievers went 17-15 overall last season and finished tied for fourth in the America East with a 9-7 mark. Maryland Baltimore County, in its 11th season under head coach Phil Stern, returns two starters and seven letterwinners from 2011-12 and was picked to finish sixth in the America East this season.
The Retrievers have lost five of their last six games. Lauren Chase leads four Retrievers in double figures, averaging 13.0 points per game, while senior guard Brittany Crowell is averaging 11.3 points a contest and a team-high 5.9 rebounds a game.
Sophomore guard Bria White is averaging 10.9 points per game, while senior guard Raven Harris is pouring in 10.2 points a night.
UMBC is averaging just 59.6 points a game on offense, while giving up 70.3 points a contest.
The Lady Pirates are 2-0 all-time against Maryland Baltimore County, including last season's 75-47 win at the HU Convocation Center. The two teams first met in 1996, with Hampton winning 60-59 on a neutral court. This will be Hampton's first trip to Catonsville, Md. to take on the Retrievers.
The Lady Pirates are 2-1 all-time against teams in the America East, going 2-0 against Maryland Baltimore County, and 0-1 against Stony Brook; Stony Brook beat the Lady Pirates on a neutral court 81-65 on Dec. 8, 2001.
Hampton has never faced Albany, Binghamton, Boston University, Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont.

David Six, the Lady Pirates are 34-13 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.
The Lady Pirates won their first four roads game of the 2012-13 season, taking care of Southern Miss 78-41, beating Mississippi State 56-48, beating South Carolina State 59-46, and Savannah State 70-40.
