CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team dominated on the road on Friday, upending Maryland Baltimore County 81-36 at RAC Arena.
The Lady Pirates (7-3) set a season high in points in picking up their third straight win.
Junior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) paced Hampton with a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 18 points and nine assists.
Freshman guard
Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) came off the bench to pour in a career-high 13 points – all in the second half – and seven rebounds in just 16 minutes.
UMBC's lone lead of the night came at the 19:14 mark of the first half, when Brittany Crowell hit a 3-pointer to put the Retrievers up 3-2. Ashley Lambert added a free throw at the 16:57 mark to tie the game at 4-4, but the Lady Pirates responded with a 10-0 run to go up 14-4 with 13:35 left in the half following a pair of free throws from sophomore guard
Kenia Cole (Burtonsville, Md.).
Bria White cut the lead to 14-9 at the 9:07 mark with a 3-pointer, but Hampton went on a 12-2 run to take a 26-11 lead with 3:56 left in the half after Cole again hit a pair of free throws.
The Lady Pirates led by double digits for the rest of the night, and they closed the first half on a 7-0 run, going into the locker room up 33-15 after Bennett hit a floater on an in-bound pass with five seconds left in the opening frame.
Bennett had a team-high nine points at the break.
The Lady Pirates shot 52.9 percent (19-for-36) from the floor in the second half, exploding for 48 points in the final 20 minutes. After UMBC cut the lead to 14, 36-22, with 16:05 left to play, Hampton went on an 8-0 run to go up 44-22 with 13:41 remaining on a fastbreak layup from Bennett.
Hamilton later added a 3-pointer at the 11:01 mark to give the Lady Pirates a 54-26 lead, before Jordan hit two free throws at the 10:20 mark to put Hampton up 56-26.
Another Hamilton trey at the 9:31 mark gave the Lady Pirates a 62-28 lead.
After Liz McNaughton hit a layup at the 8:42 mark to cut Hampton's lead to 62-31, UMBC only converted one field goal and scored five points the rest of the way. The Lady Pirates outscored UMBC 19-5 over that final stretch.
The Lady Pirates shot 41.9 percent (31-for-74) from the floor, hitting five of their 22 3-pointers and 14 of their 20 free throws. Hampton also out-rebounded UMBC 53-33 – including a 27-13 advantage on the offensive glass.
Hampton scored 30 points off of 26 UMBC turnovers.
The Retrievers (3-7) shot just 26.7 percent (12-for-45) from the floor and made just eight of their 17 free throws.
Lambert led UMBC with 11 points.
