LADY PIRATES TO SQUARE OFF AGAINST NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the road in search of its third straight win on Saturday, taking on rival Norfolk State at Echols Hall at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (17-4, 9-1 MEAC) dominated Delaware State on the road on Monday, winning 72-33 behind five players in double figures – led by a career-high 19 points from junior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.). Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added 14 points and senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) poured in 12 points.

Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) and junior forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) each added 10 points; Jenkins, who is second in the nation in assists as of Feb. 10, also had 10 assists.

She has had at least six assists in each of her last 12 games.

Norfolk State (9-13, 4-7 MEAC) has lost six of its last eight games following Monday's 62-58 overtime loss at Maryland Eastern Shore. Senior guards Whitney Long and Tyisha Bridges led the Spartans with 12 points each, while sophomore forward Rachel Gordon pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Norfolk State went 9-19 last season, finishing 11th in the MEAC with a 2-14 in conference play. Norfolk State, led by third-year head coach Debra Clark (who played at Hampton from 1979-82), returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last season, and the Spartans were picked to finish 13th in the league this year.

Long is the team's leading scorer, averaging 13.5 points per game, while sophomore guard Rae Corbo is the only other Spartan in double figures with 12.5 points a contest. Gordon leads the team and the MEAC with 10.1 rebounds a game.

The Spartans are scoring 64.0 points per game, while giving up 66.6 points a night.

Hampton is 47-32 all-time against Norfolk State, having won the last 11 meetings between the two teams, including a 92-43 win at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 21. Norfolk State last beat Hampton on Dec. 2, 2006, 70-66 in Echols Hall. As a Div. I program, the Lady Pirates are 27-4 against the Spartans, and Hampton is 18-15 all-time against Norfolk State on the road.

The Lady Pirates are 269-136 all-time against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC school. In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 26-13 in road games over the past two-plus seasons — including a 60-37 win at Pitt, a 68-55 win at Jacksonville, a 79-62 win at IPFW, a 66-39 win at Chicago State, a 71-63 win at Boston College, a 76-50 win at Coppin State, an 83-51 win at Morgan State, a 52-39 win at Howard and a 72-33 win at Delaware State.

Hampton went 11-4 on the road last season, including a stretch in which Hampton won five straight road games. Hampton went 6-6 on the road in 2009-10, Six's first season at the helm.

Saturday's game will be broadcast by the Heritage Sports Radio Network on Sirius Satellite Radio channel 137, starting with the pregame show at 3:30 p.m.
