LADY PIRATES RETURN HOME TO FACE LADY HAWKS

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center to kick off its final home stand of the season on Saturday, where the Lady Pirates will square off against Maryland Eastern Shore at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (18-4, 10-1 MEAC) picked up their third straight win on Feb. 11 with a 68-46 win over Norfolk State at Echols Hall. Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the way with 28 points behind a career-high eight 3-pointers, while senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 21 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 assists.

The Lady Hawks (9-14, 6-5 MEAC) fell 54-47 at Coppin State on Monday, despite 15 points from senior guard/forward Kwinnyata Mercer and nine points and 11 rebounds from senior forward/center Adobi Agbasi.

UMES went 12-19 last season, finishing seventh in the MEAC with a mark of 8-8 in the conference. The Lady Hawks, under eighth-year head coach Fred Batchelor, return three starters and six letterwinners from last season, and UMES was picked to finish eighth in the MEAC this season.

Junior guard/forward Chelsea Sanders leads the team in scoring as the only Lady Hawk in double figures with 13.6 points per game. Sophomore forward Shanyce Stewart is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 5.9 boards per contest.

UMES is scoring just 52.8 points per game, while giving up 55.7 points a night.

Hampton is 31-6 all-time against Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Lady Pirates have won the last seven meetings — including a 47-29 win last season at the HU Convocation Center. UMES last defeated Hampton on Feb. 4, 2006, when the Lady Hawks won 59-51 in Princess Anne, Md.

Hampton is 14-1 all-time against UMES at home.

The Lady Pirates are 270-136 all-time against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC school. In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 27-6 at  the HU Convocation Center over the past two-plus seasons — including a 10-2 mark at home last season and a 10-3 mark in 2009-10. The Lady Pirates had won 16 straight at home dating back to last season prior to a 69-66 overtime loss to Coppin State on Jan. 28.

Hampton is 7-1 at home this season, having beaten South Carolina State, Savannah State, Maryland Baltimore County, East Carolina, Howard, Norfolk State and Morgan State.
