LADY PIRATES USE BALANCED ATTACK TO ROUT DELAWARE STATE

DOVER, Del. – The Hampton University women's basketball team used a balanced attack to upend Delaware State 72-33 Monday evening at Memorial Hall.

The Lady Pirates (17-4, 9-1 MEAC) picked up their second straight win and recorded a season low in points allowed. Over half of Delaware State's points came at the free throw line, as the Lady Hornets managed just eight field goals all game.

Junior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) led five Lady Pirates in double figures with a career-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, while senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added 14 points and senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) poured in 12 points.

Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) and junior forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) each added 10 points. Jenkins, who leads the nation with 7.8 assists per game coming into Monday's contest, also had 10 assists.

Hampton opened the game on a 6-0 spurt, and the Lady Pirates held Delaware State without a field goal until the 13:30 mark of the first half. The Lady Pirates grew the lead to 16-2 at the 9:30 mark after a jumper from senior center Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas).

After Avant sank a layup with 6:24 left in the half, the Lady Pirates led 22-6. Delaware State's last field goal of the half came at the 5:59 mark, when Tierra Hawkins sank a layup to cut the Lady Pirates' lead to 22-8.

The Lady Pirates led 29-14 at the half, holding the Lady Hornets to just four first-half field goals. Delaware State scored six of its 14 first-half points at the free throw line.

Hawkins cut Hampton's lead to 31-17 with 18:03 left in the second half, but the was as close as Delaware State would get the rest of the contest; the Lady Pirates went on a 9-2 run to take a 40-19 lead with 14:09 left to play after a Warner 3-point play.

McMillian hit a jumper with 9:02 to play to put Hampton up 55-26, and an Avant layup at the 5:08 mark put the Lady Pirates up by 50 for the first time, 59-29.

From that point, Hampton closed out the game on a 13-4 run.

The Lady Pirates shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the floor, thanks to a 17-for-29 effort (58.6 percent) in the second half. Hampton also had a 37-25 edge on the boards, while also recording a season-low five turnovers.

Hampton forced 19 Delaware State turnovers, scoring 16 points off of them.

Delaware State (4-18, 1-8 MEAC) shot just 23.5 percent (8-for-34) from the floor and missed all five of its 3-point attempts – marking the first time this season the Lady Pirates have held an opponent without a 3-pointer.

Hawkins led the Lady Hornets with 17 points.
