Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against George Washington on Tuesday, losing the first game 5-0 before dropping the second game 3-2 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
The Lady Pirates (11-17) have still won seven out of their last 12 games.
George Washington opened the first game with a three-run first inning, thanks to a two-run home run down the left field line from Victoria Valos, before adding two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior
Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) had three of the Lady Pirates' five hits in the first game of the doubleheader, while senior
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) went six innings and struck out two batters.
The Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game after Valos led off with a double and later scored on a throwing error, before adding two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead after a Julie Orlandi RBI single.
Hampton struck back in the top of the seventh; after junior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) walked to load the bases, junior
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice and senior
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored on a throwing error.
Sophomore
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) then singled home Ferguson to cut George Washington's lead to 3-2, but the Colonials held on for the win.
Freshman
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out four in six innings of work.
Wilkins and Jackson each had two hits for the Lady Pirates, while Ferguson also went 1-for-2 at the plate. Brown and Byrd also had hits in the second game.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they open conference play at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex with a doubleheader against Morgan State starting at 2 p.m. The third game in that series will be on Sunday at 12 p.m.
