SOFTBALL COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF HOWARD

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team completed a three-game sweep over rival Howard on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, taking a 10-2 win in 10 innings.

The Lady Pirates (17-24, 5-4 MEAC) have now won four straight games.

Hampton pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) singled home senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.), before junior Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) added a sacrifice fly to center to give the Lady Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Brown reached on a fielding error in the second inning, scoring senior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) to give Hampton a 3-0 lead. Howard answered in the top of the fourth, when Samantha Gatson brought home a pair of runs with a single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Boykin reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning, advancing to third base as junior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) scored. Boykin later came home on a wild pitch to put Hampton up 5-2.

Trimble led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to left field, before Saunders doubled to left-center field to advance Trimble to third. Sophomore Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) then broke the game open, cranking a three-run home run to left field, her second of the season, to give the Lady Pirates an 8-2 lead.

A few batters later, junior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) came in as a pinch hitter, knocking a single down the left field line to bring in Scott and give Hampton a 9-2 lead. Boykin, who had singled, advanced to third base.

She later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Pirates up 10-2 and invoke the run rule.

Freshman Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out five hitters and scattered three hits in five innings of work to record her 10th win an 17th complete game of the season.

Wilkins led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-3 and driving in three runs. Trimble, Scott and Boykin each added two hits apiece.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Thursday, when they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a doubleheader against North Carolina at 4 p.m. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
