HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball used another second-half comeback on Saturday, remaining unbeaten in conference play after beating Morgan State 66-60 at the HU Convocation Center.
For the second straight game, junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) keyed the comeback, with 15 of her team-high 24 points coming after the intermission. Senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) came off the bench to add 15 points.
The Lady Pirates (13-5, 4-0 MEAC) have won four straight games and are 4-0 in the Convocation Center so far this season.
After Amarah Williams hit a layup with 9:02 remaining in the second half to give Morgan State a 46-43 lead, the Lady Pirates responded with back-to-back buckets from Hamilton – she hit a jumper at the 8:44 mark to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 46-45, before giving Hampton a 47-46 lead with 7:26 to play with a fast-break layup.
Those baskets set off a 10-1 Lady Pirates run, giving them a 53-47 lead with 3:05 to play after a free throw from junior forward/center
Brascia Audain (St. Kitts, Virgin Islands). Morgan State went over eight minutes without a basket; by the time Bianca Jarrett hit a jumper with 45 seconds left, the Lady Bears had only cut Hampton's lead to 59-53.
But Jarrett brought Morgan State back, going on a personal 9-2 run to cut Hampton's lead to 61-60 with 21 seconds left. But senior guard
JoNiquia Guilford (Chesapeake, Va.) and Hamilton combined to hit five free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
Morgan State jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the game, before the Lady Pirates tied the score at 6-6 on an Avant layup at the 15:31 mark of the first half. Hampton's first lead came with 6:53 left in the half, when Allen hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Pirates up 14-11.
Hampton led by as many as seven in the first half, going up 22-15 at the 4:26 mark after another Allen trey, but Morgan State closed the half on a 10-3 run, taking a 25-23 lead into the locker room after two free throws from Moneshia Davis with 25 seconds left.
A 9-3 Morgan State run opened the second half, and the Lady Bears led 34-26 with 16:36 left top play after a Jarrett layup. Hampton answered with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 36-36 with 12:22 left after an Allen layup.
The Lady Pirates shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the floor, including a 40.0 percent clip (12-for-30) in the second half. Hampton hit six of its 20 3-pointers (30.0 percent) and went 22-for-36 (61.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Hampton also held a 48-44 edge on the glass and turned 17 Morgan State turnovers into 17 points. The Lady Pirates also got 30 points off the bench, compared to just 14 from the Lady Bears.
Morgan State (5-12, 2-2 MEAC) shot 27.9 percent (17-for-61) from the floor and hit 21 of its 24 free throws (87.5 percent). The Lady Bears did not reach the 30-percent shooting mark in either half.
Jarrett led Morgan State with a game-high 31 points, including 22 in the second half.
