HAMPTON, Va. – For the first time since the 2009-10 season, the Hampton University women's basketball team will open its season at home, taking on Saint Peter's at the HU Convocation Center on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the FoodBank of the Peninsula.
The MEAC's head coaches and sports information directors have chosen the Lady Pirates to repeat as MEAC champions in 2013-14, giving Hampton 20 of a possible 26 first-place votes. Hampton has won the last three MEAC regular-season titles and the last four MEAC Tournament crowns.
The Lady Pirates return two starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad that won 28 games and went undefeated in conference play for the first time in program Division I history.
Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) and senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) were each named Preseason First Team All-MEAC, and Bennett, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, was named Preseason Co-Player of the Year, along with Florida A&M's Jasmine Grice.
Hampton's next win will also be the 100th in head coach
David Six's collegiate career.
The Peacocks come into the 2013-14 season with a new head coach, Pat Coyle, and they return three starters and six letterwinners from a squad that went 2-28 last season. Saint Peter's was picked to finish 11th in the MAAC in the coaches' preseason poll, and senior guard Aziza May, who averaged 11.5 points per game last season, was named Preseason Third Team All-MAAC.
Hampton is 1-0 all-time against Saint Peter's after last season's 62-40 win in Jersey City, N.J. on Dec. 27, 2012. This will be the Peacocks' first visit to the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates are 2-0 all-time against schools currently in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), having defeated Iona 66-58 on the road on Dec. 7, 1996 and beaten Saint Peter's 62-40 in Jersey City, N.J. last season. Hampton has never faced Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola (Md.), Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Rider, Saint Peter's, or Siena.
The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four years under head coach
David Six, they are 40-6 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton has not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, when they fell 69-66 to Coppin State in overtime.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won 14 straight home games.
