LADY PIRATES FALL TO AMERICAN AT HOME

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team suffered through a cold shooting night on Wednesday, falling 58-46 to American in the HU Convocation Center.

It was the Lady Pirates' first home loss since the 2011-12 season, and it snapped the team's 16-game home winning streak.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) led the Lady Pirates (5-3) with 20 points on 8-for-18 shooting, while freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) added nine points. Senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) and sophomore guard Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) each added nine rebounds.

Bennett gave the Lady Pirates an early 6-5 lead with a jumper at the 16:54 mark, and baskets from Tate-DeFreitas and Hamilton put Hampton up 10-5 with 12:06 left in the first half. But American went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with 9:16 left.

Bennett tied the game at 15-15 with a free throw at the 6:09 mark, but American regained the lead and went into the half up 22-21.

Hamilton had eight points at the break.

American opened the second half by scoring 16 of the first 18 points, taking a 38-23 lead with 11:11 to play on a 3-pointer from Alexis Dobbs. Hampton scored the next six points to close the gap to 38-29 on a tip-in from Jordan at the 8:21 mark.

But the Eagles never led by any less than five, when a Hamilton free throw with 2:18 left cut the lead to 49-44. American closed the game with a 9-2 run to hand the Lady Pirates their first home loss since Jan. 28, 2012.

The Lady Pirates shot 25.8 percent (17-for-66) from the floor and made two of their 16 3-pointers. American shot 32.7 percent (16-for-49) from the floor, hit five of its 23 3-pointers (21.7 percent), and out-rebounded Hampton 51-38.

Alexis Dobbs led American (5-2) with 22 points.
