Game Notes
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its eighth straight win on Saturday, taking on Morgan State at 2 p.m. at the Talmadge Hill Field House.
The Lady Pirates (16-5, 7-0 MEAC) upended rival Howard 67-45 on Monday, thanks to a team-high 16 points each from senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) and junior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.).
Morgan State (6-14, 3-4 MEAC) snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday with a 55-39 win over North Carolina Central. Senior guard Bianca Jarrett had a game-high 23 points, while sophomore guard Tracey Carrington added 16 points.
The Lady Bears went 6-24 last season, finishing 12th in the MEAC with a 3-13 record. Morgan State, in its eighth season under head coach Donald Beasley, returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's squad, and the Lady Bears were picked to finish 12th in the MEAC this season.
Jarrett leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds per contest. Carrington is averaging 11.3 points per game, while also grabbing a team-high 6.0 rebounds per contest. Jarrett is third in the MEAC in scoring and ninth in assists, averaging 2.9 per contest.
Morgan State is averaging 62.3 points per game, while giving up 68.0 points a contest.
Hampton is 23-11 all-time against Morgan State, and the Lady Pirates have won the last five meetings — including a 66-60 win on Jan. 19 in Hampton, Va. The Lady Bears last beat Hampton on Feb. 23, 2009, and the Lady Pirates are 7-8 against Morgan State on the road.
Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won five regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach
David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.
Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000.
Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 39-14 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.
The Lady Pirates are 9-1 on the road so far this season, with that lone loss coming at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
