LADY PIRATES HIT THE ROAD TO FACE UMES

Game Notes

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will take its 11-game winning streak on the road on Wednesday to take on Maryland Eastern Shore at 5:30 p.m. at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Lady Pirates (20-5, 11-0 MEAC) upended Norfolk State 83-42 on Monday behind a career-high 26 points from senior guard Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.), as well as 23 points and 12 rebounds from senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) for her 15th double-double of the season.

Hampton has won 20 games in each of the last four seasons.

UMES (7-15, 3-8 MEAC) fell 55-50 to Coppin State on Monday, despite nine points and nine rebounds from freshman forward/center Alexis Udoji.

The Lady Hawks went 12-18 last season, finishing sixth in the MEAC with an 8-8 mark. Maryland Eastern Shore, in its ninth season under head coach Fred Batchelor, returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last season, and the Lady Hawks were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC this season.

Senior guard/forward Karona Roach leads the Lady Hawks in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game. Junior forward Shanyce Stewart is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 8.1 boards per contest.

Roach is also the only UMES player averaging in double figures in scoring.

UMES is averaging just 54.7 points per game on offense, while giving up 60.1 points per night.

Hampton is 32-6 all-time against Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Lady Pirates have the last eight meetings — including a 47-29 win at the HU Convocation Center last season. UMES last beat the Lady Pirates in 2006, and Hampton is 12-5 against UMES on the road.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won five regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.

Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000.

Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 41-14 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.

The Lady Pirates are 11-1 on the road so far this season, with that lone loss coming at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
