LADY PIRATES UPEND UMES, WIN 12TH STRAIGHT GAME

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University women's basketball team picked up its 12th straight win on Wednesday night, taking care of Maryland Eastern Shore 78-47 at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Hampton now has the 11th-longest winning streak in Division I.

The Lady Pirates (21-5, 12-0 MEAC) scored 41 points off of 30 UMES turnovers. Over the last two games, Hampton has scored a combined 74 points off of 57 turnovers.

Senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Lady Pirates with 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while junior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 16 points and a team-high six assists.

Senior guard Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) recorded her ninth straight double-digit scoring game with 14 points, and junior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points.

The Lady Pirates opened the game on a 23-0 run, taking that lead at the 9:41 mark after Hamilton nailed a jumper. UMES' first basket didn't come until the 9:12 mark, when Karona Roach hit a 3-pointer to cut Hampton's lead to 23-3.

Following that basket, Hamilton hit a 3-pointer and Avant hit a jumper at the 8:15 mark to put Hampton up 28-3. Hampton led 30-5 after a pair of free throws from Bennett with 7:14 left in the first half. Senior forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a layup with 1:23 left in the half to put Hampton up 36-13.

Hampton led 38-18 at the half, and Allen led the way with 12 points in the first 20 minutes. UMES only made six first-half field goals, while committing 17 turnovers.

The Lady Pirates opened the second half on a 15-2 run, taking a 53-20 lead on a breakaway layup from Avant with 14:29 left to play. Bennett scored eight points during that Lady Pirates run.

Hamilton converted a 4-point play at the 13:26 mark to give Hampton a 57-23 lead. A Hamilton jumper with 12:13 to play put the Lady Pirates up 61-29.

Senior guard JoNiquia Guilford (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a 3-pointer with 4:59 to play to give the Lady Pirates a 72-40 lead. She added a pair of layups off turnovers to put the Lady Pirates up 76-40 with 4:32 left to play.

The Lady Pirates shot 45.5 percent (28-for-63) from the floor, hitting five of their 21 3-pointers (23.8 percent) and going 17-for-22 (77.3 percent) from the free throw line. Hampton also held a 35-31 edge on the glass, as well as a 30-14 advantage in points in the paint.

Hampton had 20 fast-break points to just two for UMES (7-16, 3-9 MEAC).

UMES shot 34.9 percent (15-for-43) from the floor and hit five of its 15 3-pointers (33.3 percent). The Lady Hawks also hit 12 of their 16 free throws, going 75 percent from the charity stripe.

Roach led UMES with 14 points, despite going 4-for-13 from the floor.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they head to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State at 5:30 p.m. in their final road game of the season.
