LADY PIRATES SET TO TAKE ON COPPIN STATE

Game Notes

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its ninth straight win on Monday, squaring off against Coppin State at 5:30 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.

The Lady Pirates (17-5, 8-0 MEAC) upended Morgan State 81-60 on Saturday behind a career-high 32 points and 13 rebounds from senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.). Junior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 16 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) added 15 points.

Coppin State (9-13, 5-4 MEAC) dismantled Norfolk State 79-49 on Saturday, thanks to 17 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Leola Spotwood, as well as 12 points and five assists from senior guard Shawntae Payne.

The Lady Eagles went 20-12 last season, finishing fourth in the MEAC with a mark of 13-3 before falling to Hampton in the MEAC Tournament semifinals. Coppin State, in its 14th season under head coach Derek Brown, return three starters and were picked to finish third in the MEAC this season.

Spotwood is the team's leading scorer so far this season, pouring in 12.5 points per game while also grabbing a team-high 7.7 rebounds per contest. Junior forward Kyra Coleman is averaging 11.3 points per game, while Payne is third in scoring with 10.3 points per game.

Coppin State is averaging 63.2 points per game, while giving up 62.1 points a contest.

Hampton is 19-15 all-time against Coppin State, and the Lady Pirates have won six of the last eight meetings — including a 66-60 win on Jan. 21. Coppin State is the last MEAC team to beat Hampton (69-66 in overtime last season at the HU Convocation Center).

Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won five regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.

Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000.

Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 40-14 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.

The Lady Pirates are 10-1 on the road so far this season, with that lone loss coming at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
