HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split its final two games of the Lady Pirates Classic on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, beating Siena 4-3 before falling 2-1 to Delaware.
The Lady Pirates (11-12) have won six of their last eight games.
Hampton, the designated road team against Siena, scored three runs in the top of the second inning, starting when sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) reached on an error to bring in a run. Two more runs scored when junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) reached on another error, giving Hampton a 3-0 lead.
Siena scored a run in the bottom of the second, before adding another run in the third to cut Hampton's lead to 3-2.
Wilkins added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to give the Lady Pirates a 4-2 lead.
An RBI single from Chelsea Stout in the bottom of the seventh closed the Lady Pirates' lead to 4-3, but Hampton managed to get out of the bases-loaded jam and get the win.
Freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) had two of the Lady Pirates' four hits.
Freshman
Jecholia Pratt (Orlando, Fla.) went 6.1 innings to pick up her second career win, striking out four.
Delaware struck first in the second game, a pitchers' duel, with a run in the top of the first inning after Jessica Grisler led off the game with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice.
The Lady Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning after Wilkins and freshman
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) stole their respective bases, and Ponds scored on a throwing error.
But Delaware scored on a throwing error in the top of the fifth to score the eventual winning run.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went the full seven innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters and giving up just two runs (one earned).
