SOFTBALL GEARING UP FOR UMBC TOURNAMENT

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team will play in its final tournament of the regular season this weekend, competing in the University of Maryland Baltimore County Spring Classic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

Select games will also be played at Coppin State.

The Lady Pirates (11-16) will take on Princeton at 11:45 a.m. and Siena at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, before squaring off against Georgetown at 12:20 p.m. and Princeton at 2:25 p.m. on Saturday.

Hampton will close out the tournament on Sunday against host UMBC at 12:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates are coming off a doubleheader loss to Towson on Wednesday, two games in which Hampton pushed across a combined eight runs. Prior to this week's action, Hampton won three out of four games in the Lady Pirates Classic over the weekend.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.), who leads Hampton with eight wins on the mound so far this season, struck out a career-high 13 batters on Wednesday in the first game against Towson. She has 98 strikeouts in 102.2 innings pitched so far this season, and Jackson has at least five strikeouts in nine of her last 11 appearances.

Junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) is on a 12-game hitting streak, including a 3-for-4 effort at the plate in the second game against Towson on Wednesday. For the season, she's hitting a team-best .411, with a team-high 37 hits and 16 RBIs.

Senior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) leads the team with 18 RBIs, and she is tied with Wilkins for the team lead in home runs with three.

The Lady Pirates are 1-1 all-time against Princeton and 2-8 against UMBC. Hampton last faced UMBC in 2009, losing both games in the UMBC Tournament. The Lady Pirates split a pair of games with Princeton in the Maryland Round Robin Tournament in 2011.

Hampton won its first-ever meeting against Siena this past Saturday, beating the Saints 4-3 in the Lady Pirates Classic. The Lady Pirates are also 1-0 all-time against Georgetown, beating the Hoyas 2-0 on March 30, 2007.

It is Hampton's last win over a team from one of the “power six” conferences.

Following this weekend's tournament, the Lady Pirates will begin MEAC play, heading back to Baltimore, Md. on March 23-24 for a three-game set at Morgan State. Once conference play starts, the Lady Pirates will only have two more non-conference tilts this season.
