LADY PIRATES TO CLOSE REGULAR SEASON AGAINST NCCU

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will close out the 2012-13 regular season Thursday evening at the HU Convocation Center, celebrating Senior Night as the Lady Pirates take on North Carolina Central at 6 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (24-5, 15-0 MEAC) won their 15th straight game on Monday, dismantling Bethune-Cookman 74-28 and giving up the second-fewest points in program history. Senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds as five Lady Pirates finished the night in double figures.

Hampton is one win shy of setting a new program Div. I record for longest winning streak, and if the Lady Pirates win on Thursday, they'll become the first team since Coppin State in 2006-07 to go undefeated in MEAC play.

The Lady Pirates have never gone undefeated in the MEAC.

NCCU (2-26, 2-13 MEAC) fell 70-50 to South Carolina State on Monday, despite 14 points from freshman guard Aja Hoyle, 11 points and six rebounds from redshirt-senior guard/forward Chasidy Williams, and 10 points from freshman forward Tisha Dixon.

The Lady Eagles went 3-27 last season, finishing 13th in the MEAC with a 1-15 record. NCCU, in its first season under head coach Vanessa Taylor, returns three starters and five letterwinners, and was picked to finish 13th in the MEAC this season.

Williams is the Lady Eagles' leading scorer so far this season, averaging 9.9 points per game to go along with a team-high 6.4 rebounds per contest.

NCCU is averaging just 38.5 points per game, while giving up 56.7 points per contest.

Hampton is 16-2 all-time against North Carolina Central, and the Lady Pirates have won the last nine meetings — including a 86-35 win last season in Durham, N.C. Hampton is 8-0 against the Lady Eagles at home.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won six regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.

Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000. The Lady Pirates clinched this season's regular season title, their third in a row, on Saturday with a 59-39 win over Florida A&M.

Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 39-6 at the HU Convocation Center over the past nearly four seasons — including a 9-1 record at home last year. Hampton's lone home loss last season came in overtime against Coppin State, 69-66 on Jan. 28.

Prior to that loss, the Lady Pirates had won 16 straight home games. The Lady Pirates are 10-0 at home so far this season following Monday's decisive win over Bethune-Cookman.
