HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team won its first game of the Lady Pirates Classic on Friday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex, beating Connecticut Central State 4-2 in its 2013 home opener.
The Lady Pirates (9-11) were trailing 1-0 after the Blue Devils scored in the top of the first inning after an RBI single up the middle from Nicole Springer. But Hampton tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after sophomore
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit her first home run of the season over the right-field wall.
Senior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) gave the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead later in the inning, singling up the middle to score freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio).
Burruel added an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the second, scoring freshman
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.), before Langlois reached on a fielding error that scored Burruel to put Hampton up 4-1.
CCSU (5-4) threatened in the top of the seventh inning as darkness approached, loading the bases with nobody out. After Hannah Cooper struck out swining, Tessa Brown drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field to cut Hampton's lead to 4-2.
But Ashley Black was thrown out trying to advance to third base on the play to end the game.
The Lady Pirates had 10 hits on the afternoon, with Burruel recording a team-high three. Junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Scott went 2-for-3.
Burruel drove in a game-high two runs.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out six in tossing a complete game, while holding the Blue Devils to just four hits and one earned run. She picked up her seventh win of the season.
The Lady Pirates Classic will continue on Saturday at 8 a.m. with Siena taking on Delaware. The Lady Pirates will square off against Canisius on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the day's fifth and final game.
