HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team picked up its second win in the Lady Pirates Classic on Saturday, defeating Canisius 4-1 at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex.
The Lady Pirates (10-11) have won five of their last six games.
Hampton struck first in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a two-run triple to right field from freshman
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) that scored sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) and senior
Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.).
Junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, CA), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added a sacrifice fly to right field later in the inning to score Ponds and give the Lady Pirates a 3-0 lead
Canisius (8-4) scored a run on a fielder's choice in the top of the fourth to cut Hampton's lead to 3-1.
Freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) singled home a run in the bottom of the fifth to bring home Wilkins and give the Lady Pirates a 4-1 lead.
Ponds went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went the distance in picking up her eighth win of the season, scattering four hits over seven innings and striking out five.
