HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split a doubleheader with Campbell on Thursday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, winning the first game 4-3 in walkoff fashion before losing the second game 9-4.
The Lady Pirates (25-22) have won 14 of their last 18 games.
Hampton picked up its seventh straight win in the first game of the doubleheader, despite Campbell jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Raven Lee brought in the first run with an RBI single, before Sarah Forgacs doubled in another run and later scored on a throwing error.
The Lady Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the third after a sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.), which brought home freshman
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.).
Vallejo later scored in the fifth inning on an error to cut Campbell's lead to 4-2.
Freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single which brought home freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.), the MEAC Rookie of the Week. Langlois advanced to third on the play.
She then scored the winning run, and snapped Campbell's nine-game winning streak, when senior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) reached on an error.
Junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates with three hits in four at-bats in the first game. Langlois pitched the full seven innings in picking up her fourth win of the season, scattering six hits and striking out five.
Campbell (36-17) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the second game after a two-run home run to left field from Camise Patterson. Courtney Klingler added a two-run shot of her own in the third inning to put Campbell up 4-0.
Ponds got Hampton on the board in the bottom of the third, tripling to center field and scoring on a throwing error.
Campbell took a 5-1 lead in the fifth when Stephanie Jones scored on a passed ball.
Hampton scored again in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled to left-center field. Langlois and McCoy each scored on the play, thanks to separate throwing errors, to cut Campbell's lead to 5-3.
Jones had an RBI single in the seventh to put Campbell up 6-3, before Lee hit a three-run home run off the scoreboard to put the Fightin' Camels up 9-3.
McCoy singled home Vallejo in the bottom of the inning.
McCoy went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lady Pirates in the second game.
