HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team won in walk-off fashion on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, beating Coppin State 3-2 to complete the three-game conference series sweep.
The Lady Pirates (28-22, 14-1 MEAC) are assured of a regular season above .500 for the first time since 2009 and have won 17 of their last 21 games – including 10 straight in conference play.
Hampton is currently tied for first with Norfolk State in the MEAC Northern Division.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) was on second base as freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.), the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, came to the plate.
McCoy reached on a fielder's choice, as Vallejo advanced to third base on the play and made the turn for home plate. She appeared to be caught in a run-down, but the throw to the plate sailed high and Vallejo scored the winning run.
Coppin State (13-23, 6-9 MEAC) scored first in the top of the first inning after an RBI double from Nicole Boggs to go up 1-0, then the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI single from Lauren Rogers.
The Lady Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting Coppin State's lead to 2-1 after an RBI single to center field from freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) which scored Vallejo.
McCoy reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth, and when there was a throwing error on the play, senior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Vallejo scored twice in the game.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched five innings of relief to pick up her 22nd win of the season, holding Coppin State to just two of its five overall hits and striking out seven.
In 21 innings of work this weekend, Jackson struck out 29 batters.
The Lady Pirates will close out the regular season on Saturday and Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium with a three-game set against rival Norfolk State. Saturday's game, at 2 p.m., will be televised live on ESPNU.
Sunday's doubleheader, which starts at 12 p.m., will also be Senior Day.
