WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University women's basketball team, on an 11-game winning streak, will head to Burr Gymnasium on Saturday to take on rival Howard at 5 p.m.
It will be the next-to-last road game of the season for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Pirates (21-4, 12-0 MEAC) dismantled Norfolk State this past Saturday in Echols Hall, beating the Spartans 93-59 for their fourth 90-point game of the season. Freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the charge with 33 points, hitting a career-high seven 3-pointers.
Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 22 points on 11-for-16 shooting, leaving her five points shy of 1,000 for her career. Junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) added 14 points.
Hampton shot a season-best 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the floor.
The Lady Bison (10-14, 6-5 MEAC) were picked to finish fifth in the MEAC this season, and Howard fell 66-57 to Maryland Eastern Shore this past Saturday. Howard, in its first season under head coach Tennille S. Adams, is led by redshirt-freshman guard Te'Shya Heslip, who is averaging a team-best 13.5 points per game.
The Lady Pirates are 27-20 all-time against Howard, and the Lady Pirates have won each of the last 11 meetings — including a 76-64 win at the HU Convocation Center earlier this season. Howard last defeated Hampton on Dec. 5, 2009 in Washington, D.C., and the Lady Pirates are 9-11 against Howard on the road.
Hampton is 306-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 27-20 mark against Howard — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 42 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were 13-2 on the road last season, with their only road defeats being at Duke in the NCAA Tournament and at Virginia Tech. Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are 50-18 in road games over the past four-plus seasons. So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 8-3 in true road games after a 93-59 win at Norfolk State on Saturday.
Hampton has won its last 26 road conference games.
