SOFTBALL WINS TWO GAMES IN GREENBORO TOURNEY

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University softball team won two of its four games this past Saturday and Sunday in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic, beating Army and George Washington at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
The Lady Pirates (3-6) beat Army 6-1 on Friday and took out George Washington 7-1 on Saturday. Hampton also fell 8-0 to Minnesota and 10-2 to host UNC Greensboro over the weekend.
 
Army struck first on Friday with a run in the first inning, but the Lady Pirates answered with five runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) drove in the first run with an RBI triple, before she scored on a single from junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.).
 
Sophomore Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) then cracked a three-run home run, her first of the season, over the left-center field wall to give the Lady Pirates a 5-1 lead.
 
Wilkins added an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give Hampton a 6-1 lead. She went 3-for-4 at the plate against Army, driving in two runs. McCoy had a team-high three RBIs.
 
Junior Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went all seven innings, striking out six and giving up just four hits.
 
On Saturday, George Washington scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, before the Lady Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the third when Wilkins drove in a couple runs with a triple to right-center field to put Hampton up 2-1.
 
Freshman Heather Baccus (Hartford, N.C.) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give Hampton a 3-1 lead. Wilkins added a sac fly in the fifth inning, which capped a four-run frame for the Lady Pirates.
 
Junior Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) added an RBI single later in the fifth, before Baccus drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give the Lady Pirates a 7-1 lead.
 
Wilkins, Burruel, and Baccus each had two hits against George Washington, while Baccus and Wilkins each drove in three runs. Jackson struck out three and gave up just three hits in seven innings of work.
 
The Lady Pirates will host the Hampton University Invitational this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, with a field including Saint Joseph's, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hartford, and Columbia.
