NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team's quest for a fifth straight MEAC Tournament title in the semifinal round on Friday, as the Lady Pirates take on Savannah State at 12 p.m. in Norfolk Scope.
With a win, Hampton would make its sixth straight appearance in the title game.
The top-seeded Lady Pirates (26-4) have won 16 straight games after Wednesday's 71-55 quarterfinal win over Howard, a game in which senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) poured in 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.
Freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Va.) added 19 points, and junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) poured in 11 points.
The Lady Tigers (19-13) were picked to finish 12th in the MEAC this season and wound up fifth when the regular season ended. Savannah State has won back-to-back games, including a 84-75 win over Florida A&M in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Senior guard Ezinne Kalu, a Third Team All-MEAC selection, is the team's leading scorer with 16.3 points per game.
Freshman center Tiyonda Davis is the top rebounder with 7.1 boards a contest.
The Lady Pirates are 3-0 against Savannah State, including a 70-46 win in Tiger Arena earlier this season. The first meeting was two seasons ago, Savannah State's first in the conference, which Hampton won 59-40 at the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton's average margin of victory in the series in 24.3 points per game.
Hampton is 311-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 3-0 mark against Savannah State — and the Lady Pirates have won seven MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 47 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates are 19-9 on neutral courts in Six's tenure, including a 4-0 mark so far this season after a pair of wins in the Cal State Northridge Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30, a win over Brown on Dec. 29 in the opening game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Invitational, and a 71-55 win over Howard on Wednesday.
Hampton has won its last eight neutral-court games dating back to last season, and under Six, the Lady Pirates are 13-0 in MEAC Tournament games.
