HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will close out the regular season on Thursday, squaring off against North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m. to celebrate Senior Night.
It will be the final home game for
Brascia Audain,
Nicole Hamilton, and
Alyssa Bennett.
The Lady Pirates (24-4, 15-0 MEAC) picked up their 14th straight win on Saturday with an 83-54 defeat of Norfolk State at the Convocation Center, wrapping up their fourth straight MEAC regular-season crown. Freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.), the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, led the way with 19 points.
Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) had 18 points and seven assists. Junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) poured in 16 points.
The Lady Aggies (23-4, 13-2 MEAC) were picked to finish second in the MEAC this season and have won nine straight games after defeating South Carolina State 52-42. Senior guard/forward Tracy King leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game. She is averaging 14.1 points per game in MEAC play.
The Lady Pirates are 20-13 all-time against North Carolina A&T, and Hampton has won the last three meetings — including a 74-66 win in Greensboro, N.C. back on Feb. 14, 2011 (the last time these two teams met). Prior to Hampton's three-game winning streak in the series, the Lady Aggies had taken 10 of 11 meetings.
Hampton is 11-5 against North Carolina A&T at home.
Hampton is 309-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 20-13 mark against North Carolina A&T — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 45 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under head coach
David Six, they are 47-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, falling to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American back on Dec. 4.
Hampton is 11-1 at home this season after defeating Norfolk State 83-54 on Saturday, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 18 home MEAC games.
With 123 career wins, Six is just five wins shy of becoming the program's all-time Div. I wins leader. Patricia Cage-Bibbs currently holds that mark, thanks to her 127 victories from 1997-2004.
