RALEIGH, N.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell to Tennessee in straight sets on Friday in the opener of the N.C. State Doubletree Cary Classic in Carmichael Gym, as Tennessee took the match
3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12).
The Lady Pirates fell to 0-11 on the season.
Reeana Richardson led the Lady Pirates with nine kills, five figs, and an ace – hitting a team-best .182.
Asya Patterson added five kills and
Summer Humes had 16 assists. Humes,
Kyndall Nicholas, and
Olivera Stojilovic each had an ace.
Patterson also had two blocks.
Tennessee (13-0) hit .400 for the match, including a .550 clip in the first set. The Lady Vols opened the set by taking a 9-1 lead, before Richardson registered back-to-back kills to stop the run and cut the lead to 9-3.
After Tennessee took a 13-4 lead, Hampton went on a 3-0 spurt to cut the gap to 13-7.
Lena Washington and
Allysa Medina had kills during that stretch.
Tennessee answered with a 6-1 run to take a 19-8 lead.
Washington ended that run with a kill, cutting the lead to 19-9, before the Lady Vols scored the next five points to force set point. Hampton scored the next two points after that, but Tennessee scored on the ensuing rally to take the set.
An ace from Stojilovic gave the Lady Pirates a 4-3 lead early in the second set, and a block from Washington and
Kennedy Kenney put Hampton up 5-4. But Tennessee answered with a 14-2 run to take an 18-7 lead before Hampton scored the next three points – ending with a kill from Richardson to cut the lead t0 18-10.
Tennessee scored the next three points to go up 21-10, before the Lady Pirates scored three unanswered of their own – cutting the lead to 21-13 after an ace from
Mallory Beard.
But the Lady Vols closed the set with a 4-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Tennessee jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open the third set, before the Lady Pirates scored the next three points and tied the set at 5-5 after an ace from Richardson. Richardson and Nicholas paired on a block later in the set to cut Tennessee's lead to 8-7 before the Lady Vols went on a 13-2 run to take a 21-9 lead.
The Lady Pirates scored three of the next four points, cutting the lead to 22-12 after a Richardson kill, before Tennessee scored the next three points to take the set and the match.
Bri Holmes led Tennessee with nine kills.
