Ashley Bates and
MaKayla Timmons scored 18 points apiece, while
Laren VanArsdale added 16 as Hampton used a 17-6 second quarter run to take a 76-66 road win over UNC Asheville on Saturday.
After a first quarter that saw the lead change hands eight times, a layup by Evonna McGill with two seconds left put UNC Asheville (12-8, 6-5) up 18-16 after one.
The lead changed hands twice in the first three minutes of the second quarter as a 3-ball from Bates put Hampton (12-8, 8-3) up 24-22 with 6:48 left in the half. A layup by Brooke Jordan-Brown evened the game for the last time at 24 just 24 seconds later. A short jumper by
Nylah Young put the guests back up 26-24 at the 6:14 mark.
Hampton pushed the advantage to 38-26 on a 3-ball by
Alyssa Sweeney with just under three minutes left in the half. The Lady Pirates held a 38-29 halftime lead after a Jordan-Brown free throw with one second left.       Â
In the second half, UNC Asheville cut the lead to seven on a Nadiria Evans jumper with seven seconds left in the third quarter to trail 54-47. Hampton pushed the lead to 16 points in the fourth as
Dlayla Chakolis hit a free throw to go up 68-52 with 3:43 left.Â
Chakolis tied her season high with eight points, while
Nylah Young had seven as Hampton finished just under 50% from the floor hitting 25-of-52 (48.1%) and was 9-of-19 from 3-point range (47.4%).
Hampton now travels to High Point for a key Big South matchup on Tuesday night at 7 pm.Â
