BIG SECOND HALF LEADS LADY PIRATES OVER USC UPSTATE

David Six becomes winningest basketball coach in Hampton University history with career win 229

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a sluggish first half that saw the Lady Pirates trail 38-25, Hampton erupted for a 31-8 third quarter en route to an 86-73 victory over USC Upstate (8-16, 3-12) on Tuesday night.

With the win head coach David Six became the all-time winningest Hampton University basketball coach, men or women, in school history winning his 229th game in 11 seasons.  Hank Ford won 228 games with the men in 12 seasons.

Ashley Bates scored Hampton's first nine points of the third quarter as a 3-pointer brought Hampton to 40-34 at the 7:32 mark.  That 3-pointer started a 19-2 run in the third as 3-pointers by Bates and Laren VanArsdale capped it to put Hampton up 50-42 with 3:16 left in the third.

Hampton (15-10, 11-5) followed up a 31-point third quarter with a 30-point fourth going 21-of-22 from the foul line.  The Lady Pirates did not hit a field goal in the final 4:55 after a 3-pointer by Nylah Young gave them a 71-58 lead.  Hampton was 15-of-16 from the line in the final 4:55 for the win.

The host Spartans used a 14-2 run midway through the first quarter as a 3-pointer by Natalia Panufnik with 4:08 left to lead 20-10.  Hampton scored the next eight points heading into the second quarter as Young hit a layup and a pair of free throws to get Hampton trailing 20-18 at 8:07 mark.  USC Upstate closed the half on an 11-4 run to lead 38-25 on a 3-ball by Shelby Grace at the buzzer.

VanArsdale topped Hampton with 28 points and five assists, while Ashley Bates was just behind her with 27 points, eight rebounds, 8-of-8 from the foul line and five assists.  Young added 17 points, seven rebounds and a season-high four steals.

In the second half, Hampton was 15-of-25 from the floor (60%), 25-of-27 from the foul line (92.6%) and hit all six attempts from 3-point range en route to the 61-point explosion.. Hampton's 8-of-10 from 3-point range on the night is the third-best single-game percentage in the Division I era and tied for fifth best overall.

Hampton returns to the home floor for two games starting on Saturday at 5 pm when they host Presbyterian.
